The Courage to Design

Teams everywhere are facing the same question: “What do we want to build?” Drawing on stories from his experiences at Apple, his lengthy career in Silicon Valley, and even the Apollo moon landings, Bob shares examples of creative courage in action.

You Don't Want to Be a Design Engineer

The role is being sold as the perfect evolution: high demand, good pay, future-proof. Mehmet has lived it at senior level, and he is here with the war stories most talks leave out.

Design for Signal

We optimized for frictionless and ended up with forgettable. Nicole makes the case for designing recognition into the moments most teams treat as details: timing, empty states, transitions, edge cases. The places where character either lives or gets rounded off.

Build Fast, Abandon Faster

Most systems are not hard to maintain because something went wrong. They are hard to maintain because that is how they were designed. Kyle makes the case for stewardship as a design practice, not an afterthought.

The Trust Gap

Trust conflicts with how products get funded and measured. The conflict is not new. AI just makes it harder to ignore. Sara draws from work with Suno and The Atlantic to break down what it actually costs to take trust seriously, and why most products will not pay it.

The Design System Identity Crisis

Models are now also consumers of the design system, and the deliverables are changing with them. Cassie shares what she has learned shipping one of the more complex versions of this in production, and where she is pushing back on the fashionable answers.

The Tools That Shape Us

Same canvas, same layers panel, same constraints. For twenty years, interface design has run on the same paradigm, and our interfaces show it. Jonny argues the way out is not to use AI differently, but to build entirely new tools with it.

The Model Is the Experience

The core of your AI product is being designed without you. System prompts, data decisions, evaluation frameworks: these are UX decisions, and right now engineering and product are making them. Paz shows designers how to move upstream before by understanding how it all works.

Maintaining Quality while Building at Speed

The default assumption is that speed and quality trade off against each other. Randy's team at Notion has spent years proving the opposite, and now they are doing it again with AI agents. This is what the system actually looks like.

Things I do

Five decades at the center of the field. More technological shifts than anyone should have to survive. For the closing of Hatch 2026, Paula Scher reflects on what design has always been, what it risks becoming, and whether the distinction still matters.
